5 Signs of a Mini Stroke in the Elderly
A “mini stroke” is medically called a TIA (transient ischemic attack). It happens when blood flow to part of the brain is briefly blocked. Symptoms usually last minutes to under 24 hours — but it’s a major warning sign of a future stroke.
According to the American Stroke Association, about 1 in 3 people who have a TIA will later have a full stroke — often within days or weeks.
Here are the 5 most important warning signs in older adults:
🚨 1. Sudden Weakness or Numbness (Especially One Side)
- Face drooping
- Arm weakness
- Leg weakness
- Tingling or loss of feeling
This typically affects one side of the body.
🚨 2. Trouble Speaking or Understanding
- Slurred speech
- Difficulty finding words
- Confusion
- Trouble understanding simple sentences
Even if speech returns to normal quickly, it should not be ignored.
🚨 3. Sudden Vision Problems
- Blurry vision
- Double vision
- Temporary loss of vision in one eye
- “Curtain” coming over the eye sensation
Vision changes that resolve quickly are common in TIAs.
🚨 4. Loss of Balance or Coordination
- Sudden dizziness
- Trouble walking
- Falling without explanation
- Poor coordination
These symptoms are especially common in elderly individuals.
🚨 5. Sudden Severe Headache (Less Common but Serious)
- Intense headache with no known cause
- May occur with other neurological symptoms
While more common in full strokes, this can occasionally happen with a TIA.
⚠️ Important: Symptoms May Go Away — But The Risk Doesn’t
Many elderly people ignore a mini stroke because symptoms disappear. That’s dangerous.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that a stroke can follow within 48 hours of a TIA.
🧠 Remember FAST
