Shepherd’s Pie 🥧
Shepherd’s pie is a classic comfort dish made with ground meat, vegetables, and creamy mashed potatoes baked on top.
Ingredients
For the meat filling
- 1 lb (450 g) ground lamb or ground beef
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp thyme or rosemary
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp oil or butter
For the mashed potato topping
- 2 cups mashed potatoes
- 2 tbsp butter
- ÂĽ cup milk
- ½ cup shredded cheese (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven
Heat oven to 375°F (190°C). - Cook the meat
Heat oil in a pan and cook the onion for 2–3 minutes. Add garlic and ground meat and cook until browned. - Add flavor and vegetables
Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, broth, herbs, and mixed vegetables. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until slightly thick. - Prepare mashed potatoes
Mix mashed potatoes with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth. - Assemble the pie
Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish. Top evenly with mashed potatoes. Sprinkle cheese if using. - Bake
Bake for 25–30 minutes until the top is lightly golden. - Serve
Let rest for 5 minutes, then serve warm.
Tips
- Traditional Shepherd’s Pie uses lamb, while beef version is often called Cottage Pie.
- Use a fork to make ridges in the potatoes so they brown nicely.
- Add mushrooms or celery for extra flavor.
